As the season comes to a close, the Varsity Softball Team has won the Liberty League Championship and is first seed going into the California Interscholastic Federation, Southern Section (CIFSS) playoffs.
The softball season spans from late February to late May.
The team is currently 12-7; in league, the girls hold an 8-2 record.
According to Archer Fitness Coach Kristen Benjamin in an email interview, Varsity Softball “dominated” Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU) on April 21.
The team held victory over AGBU after winning by “mercy rule” with a score of 16-1. Freshman Kam Bellamy ’18 pitched the team to victory, striking 10 batters out in five innings.
According to Varsity Coach Marlee Rice, Archer fell out of the top 10 in CIF Division Seven rankings a few weeks ago.
Now, according to Archer Athletics, the team is back in the CIFSS Division Seven Top Ten rankings after becoming the Liberty League champions.
The team beat Pacifica Christian 11-7 on Wed. May 13 and came out of the game with a three-way tie for first place in league. The three teams tied were Archer, Pacifica Christian and Providence.
A coin toss decided that Archer would go into CIFSS number one seed, Pacifica Christian at number two and Providence at number three.
“It feels really good, I feel like we have been working for this for the past three years. Especially this year having a really big team, a lot of freshmen coming in strong, and working really hard,” Ali Kiley ’16 said after winning league.
“It has been a great season so far and I cannot wait to see where we go,” she said.
Aside from loving the game, Rachel Magnin ’15 also loves being a captain and bonding with her team.
“This season has been so fun so far. The team is made up of an incredible group of girls and I feel really lucky to play with them for my senior season,” Magnin said. “Being a captain isn’t always easy but I truly love leading such a motivated, fun and enthusiastic group.”
The team’s first CIF game will take place on May 21 at 3:30pm at Archer. It is also the team’s annual Senior Night.
