Archer’s Varsity Volleyball team won first place at the Dig Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Volleyball Tournament for the second consecutive year, hosted at Milken School on Thursday, Oct. 1.

After winning first place in pool play, the team battled head-to-head with host school Milken in the playoff game to advance to the championships. Archer beat Milken in two sets.

The team went on to play in the finals against Heritage Christian. In the first set, Archer won in a close game, 25-23. Heritage Christian battled it out with the Varsity team, winning the set 25-20. However, Archer came out stronger in the third set, allowing the team to take the 15-9 victory.

“It was great to see the girls bounce back and avenge their loss to Heritage Christian en route to winning the [tournament] for the second year in a row,” Varsity Coach Jonathan Lotz said. “They really played to their full potential and it showed. [I’m] so proud of them.”

Zoe Pelikan ’17 and Sophie Smyth ’17 made the all-tournament team. Christian Luhnow ’16 was named MVP for the tournament.

“It is such an honor to play on such an incredible team. It’s amazing to be a part of something that is greater than yourself. My team’s encouragement and support really pushes me to be the best player I can be,” Luhnow said.

Archer Varsity Volleyball will take on their league rivals, Pacifica Christian, for their first Liberty League season game on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. at Culver City High School. Archer’s Junior Varsity team will play at the same location at 6 p.m.
