After a full season of “thrilling wins and upsetting loses,” the volleyball season ended in late October. According to Athletic Direct Denny Lennon, due to such high interest and no cuts in the sport this year, the program had a Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Freshman team.
Coached by Jonathn Lotz and Anthony Mezzavilla, the Varsity team came out of the regular season with six losses and eight wins. They placed first at the Dig Pink tournament, hosted by Milken School, and third at the Brentwood School tournament.
Varsity captains Ava Mandelbaum ’15 and Lauryn Brame ’15 took their team to CIF playoffs after placing second in the Liberty League. They were eliminated during the second round after a loss to Garden Grove.
Coaches Christine Jinbo and Marlee Rice mentored the JV team with Talia Goodman ’17 and Briana Johnson ’17 as co-captains. The team ended the season with seven losses and six wins and won second place in the Liberty League.
Archer’s first ever freshman-only volleyball team was coached by new Archer Athletics member Amber Held — they had five losses and one win. Co-captains of the team were Cybele Zhang ’18 and Joyce Barahona ’18.
Lennon said in an email interview, “It was a great year. We’re young– we have good, young players.”
Next year is expected to be just as successful. Lennon said, “There [are] close to 70 girls in the school’s [volleyball] program, with 36 incoming girls for the high school teams.”
